Lambs to the slaughter!

By James Hill at 05 May 23:17

Lambs to the slaughter

My long weekend was filled up with a lovely drive (five hours) up to the lakes district, where five of us rented a cabin/house and watched the lambs bah in the wretched stormy weather. I'm amazed that I can be wowed by both their cuteness and deliciousness at the same time!

I play a game...

By James Hill at 23 Apr 22:44

It begins with the tube I'm currently traveling on as it pulls into the destination I'm awaiting, slowly the platform morphs from a blur into a steady image that my eyes can track, then suddenly three lights appear in my field of view and the sound of three beeps that announce the start of a formula one race bleep in time to the three lights and it begins!

The doors (gates) opens and they're off, the sounds of the engines kicking up gears as they hit the straights, the weaving in and out of pedestrians, if only they knew they were also competing for the world famous james end of work tube dash title.

The rules are simple as there are only two. The first from the tube through the ticket gates win and, no running allowed. Strictly walking only!.

The last thing that is required of you to play this game, you must commentate to your self as you weave, turn, overtake, pass and finish in either a) english formula one commentator or b) aussie horse racing commentator at the melbourne cup.

I prefer the formula one commentator... Go Go Go!

Data visualisation on Facebook

By James Hill at 23 Apr 08:59

Andrew Pratley, made a cool note on facebook regarding it's lexicon visualization feature alas if you're not a friend of his you won't be able to see it. Anyway.. I'll just pinch the cool graphics and whack them on here for the greater public to view.

facebook lexicon

In the same article Andrew referred to this cool but also very disturbing data visualization from a new york times article.

People you may know! grrr facebook I hate you!

By James Hill at 23 Apr 00:05

All my hard work culling people from my facebook friends list has now been unraveled in one swift foul move from the facebook gods.

Most of you probably have noticed by now that facebook introduced a feature sometime last week allowing you to see all the friends you probably should have on your friend list. Only that it's algorithm probably works simply by ranking clusters of mutual friends.

An example would be I have 30 friends who all know this one person that's not on my friends list, and surely if 30 of my friends know this one person I should know this person, and therefore I should be friends with this person and thus I should add him/her as a friend. Well In theory this should work if everyone had the same stringent (anal) friend adding rules that I have, but alas no they don't!

My problem now is that some 150 culled "friends" are going to wake up to the realization that they have just been fed 10801, only that the dosage wasn't lethal enough and no doubt they (some already have) will just friend request me again...

On an up note, facebook have just added a feature whereby you can ignore every future application request and invite from that one (douchbag friend that can't help themselves but spread spam to everyone) person! Brilliant!

1 One of my dogs growing up found and ate 1080 fox poison on the farm, she later was found floating in the pool.

Overheard on the Underground

By James Hill at 17 Apr 21:55

So I usually get drunk and write down random things that I hear on the Tube, of course I forget about the things I write down until I'm drunk again. Anyway I'm drunk now, have found my stash of little underground notes and am gonna share them with you now!

The train driver about a week ago came out with amazing line that plastered a grin on my face for the day!

This wonderful train is ready to depart please stand clear of the marvelous doors.

And then tonight the two girls sitting next to me (on the northern line) came out with this little gem... Nice to know we all have our problems.

We'll catch up in a couple years and you'll have a hot man and a fat salary and hopefully Charlie will be off the drugs and perhaps I'll have had my baby.

My geographic ineptness

By James Hill at 17 Apr 21:42

Tonight over a couple of bevvies and a sushi roll I found out that Glastonbury is in fact in England. Actually no less than 26.9 miles to where my British invasion started (Briston). So for some two and half years I've thought Glastonbury has been north of Edinburgh. All I can say is WTF?
